Can Port-A Catheters Become Dislodged? Understanding Dislodgment Rates and Detection Methods

In our study, we investigated the occurrence of dislodgment in Port-A catheters, a crucial aspect of their functionality. We found that approximately 2.4% of the catheters in our series experienced dislodgment. Detecting such issues promptly is vital, and chest X-rays emerged as an effective tool for this purpose. Notably, most instances of catheter dislodgment were observed to occur at the site of anastomosis. This information was gathered from our study conducted on August 13, 2013, shedding light on the potential challenges associated with Port-A catheters and the importance of vigilant monitoring and early detection.

Is it possible for a chemo port catheter to shift or move within the body? Spontaneous migration of a port catheter, where it moves unintentionally within the central venous system, is a relatively rare complication, occurring in approximately 0.1% to 1.8% of cases [2,4]. This phenomenon has been documented in medical literature, with reports of 11 cases of patients experiencing such spontaneous migration as of July 17, 2022. To provide a clearer understanding of this issue, let’s delve into the details of why and how these catheters may move within the body.
