What Happens When A Fighter Jet Stalls?

When a fighter jet stalls, it experiences a phenomenon known as “buffet.” This occurs when the airflow over the aircraft’s wings separates and hits the tail section, causing turbulence and loss of lift. To recover from a stall, pilots follow a straightforward procedure. If the aircraft is in a bank, they should first roll the wings level, ensuring that the wings are no longer tilted. Simultaneously, they must push the nose of the aircraft down. This dual action serves to reduce the angle of attack, which is the angle at which the wing meets the oncoming air. By doing so, the pilot reattaches the airflow over the wing, restoring lift and control. This crucial maneuver ensures the fighter jet regains stability and can continue its flight safely. It is important for pilots to be well-trained in stall recovery techniques to handle such situations effectively. [Date: September 9, 2023]

Can You Stall An F-16?

Is it possible to induce a stall in an F-16 aircraft? Stalling typically happens when the aircraft’s angle of attack (AoA) reaches approximately 35 degrees. In the case of the F-16, stalling in straight and level flight is prevented by the Flight Control System (FLCS), which restricts the pilot’s ability to pitch the nose up to that extent. However, it is still conceivable to induce a stall intentionally, but this requires the pilot to challenge the FLCS’s limiters by making multiple limit commands, such as simultaneously pitching and rolling the aircraft. This deliberate manipulation of the controls is necessary to push the F-16 beyond its normal flight limits and provoke a stall.

Can You Stall An F22?

“Can you stall an F22?” Stalling an aircraft is a common phenomenon that applies to most airplanes, including the F22. It occurs when the angle of attack surpasses a critical value known as the alpha angle. In the case of the F22, its powerful thrust vectoring capability enables it to stay airborne for a slightly extended period by relying on sheer thrust, similar to a rocket, even when the wings are technically in a stalled condition. In essence, the ability to stall an aircraft hinges on the angle of attack, which is a crucial factor in understanding how different aircraft, such as the F22, respond to this aerodynamic challenge.

Ofcourse they do stall. They follow the same principle as any other passenger jet to fly. The only diffrence is that they have very high thrust to weight ratio (very close to 1 or higher in case of F-16) which allows them to do unbelievable maneuvers without stalling. This buffet is caused by the separated air hitting the tail of the aircraft. The recovery from a stall is quite straightforward. All a pilot must do is push the nose down and roll the wings level if the aircraft is in a bank. This action reduces the angle of attack and reattaches the airflow over the wing.Stall occurs at about 35° AoA. Because of this, it is impossible to stall the F-16 in straight and level flight. The FLCS will not allow you to command that much nose-up pitch. You can only stall the F-16 by “assaulting” the FLCS limiters with multiple limit commands (pitch and roll, for example).
